Founding motto,
educational philosophy and educational goals
Reach your fullest potential in life through personal development.
In line with its founding motto, "Reach your fullest potential in life through personal development," Yokohama University of Pharmacy guides students to perfect their personality consistently and creatively throughout life and enhance their sense of self-worth and competence.
We are all born with our own unique strengths, virtues and traits; it is our individuality that makes us special. There have never been two identical people in the human history of about four million years. Each of us is destined to live our one life as a unique being.
We believe that the purpose of education is to guide students to develop their true selves and grow toward self-realization, and that education makes people shine forever. Our motto is "Reach your fullest potential in life through personal development," which means becoming aware of one's individuality and special nature, establishing one's identity, and continuing to perfect one's personality over a lifetime.
In recent years, science and technology have achieved rapid progress in many fields, including pharmacy, and rapid innovation in medical technology has led to the development of new therapeutic and preventive drugs. However, it is widely known that the efficacy and side effects of drugs vary among patients, even with the same disease. This highlights the necessity of promoting "personalized drug therapy" optimized for individual patients' constitution and administering drugs in line with the principle of "tailor-made medical care."
We also believe that pharmacists, as medical professionals working to help people, should have "sokuin no kokoro," or the ability to understand the suffering of others. Yokoyama University of Pharmacy is committed to developing human resources with a wide range of expertise, as well as a deep sense of humanity and ethics and an international mindset.

- *1: "Tailor-made medical care" is defined slightly differently by each department of Yokohama University of Pharmacy. It means: "understanding that the efficacy of drugs in preventing diseases and maintaining good health varies among individuals" for the Department of Health Pharmacy; "prescribing drugs tailored to individual patients' constitution, not the type of disease" for the Department of Kampo Pharmacy; and "designing drug therapy with an understanding that the efficacy and side effects of drugs vary depending on individual patients' genetics and constitution" for the Department of Clinical Pharmacy. Yokohama University of Pharmacy focuses on preventing diseases and treating mibyo, a concept in kampo medicine that denotes a condition intermediate between health and illness, as well as curing diseases by drug therapy, with a full understanding of the necessity of tailor-made medical care.
- *2: "Sokuin no kokoro" is taken from the words of Mencius, "the heart of compassion is the germ of benevolence" and means the ability to understand the suffering of others, treat others with compassion and feel what others are feeling. This is the underlying idea of "Reach your fullest potential in life through personal development," the founding motto and guiding principle of Yokoyama University of Pharmacy in nurturing medical professionals.
